Suhaila workshops day two
Jul. 2nd, 2015 11:58 pmA bit sore but manageable. My restorative ability is awful these days so I modified most drills to arms in second or first instead of fifth (which is above the head. Ouch).
The format has an interesting view on technique, and it is quite stunning how recognizable the suhaila format is. Sabriye is a lovely co teacher and giving us newbs examples of what a drill looks like.
Today we go trough interior hipcircles, half circles and exterior hip circles. All
Drilled in different timing combined with basic footwork patterns and some finger cymbals. Turns out that as a dominant right player I have a hard time switching to dominant left.
Here's the thing: the audience don't care whether I am left or right handed, as long as I am in time with the music. Same goes for hipcircles: most people don't care where a circle starts or finishes, or what direction it's going.
I did not dare ask Suhaila if she still performa for the general public. I admire her work and dedication and I definitely will spend the next couple of years working with her format in order to 'get' things. I just don't believe that the people who pay me for teaching and performing are interested in me knowing her format. Also, I like drills but aftrr five hours I am exhausted and want a hot shower and a cool spot in the shade (it is unusual hot in Belgium right now). Sure it's satisfying but I'm not a masochonist or obsessive compulsive dancer so I am a bit outside her target audience.
I look forward to tomorrow, some more technique drills and then it's time to go home and pet my dog and liss my husband. Or the other way around, depends on who gets to me first
