Today we had a one off meeting with an architect to get some ideas for an annex to our livingroom at the side of the house. With Eliza here, I feel a bit of pressure to get the main construction stuff done before she an walk. Living in a house during remodelling is hell, I so do not look forward to that part of our plans. I am very excited about what we came up with.

In short, our house is a seventees house and was built with the idea of compartments with clear boundaries. This makes the livingroom feel like a big shoe box. We want more of an open feel, without opening up the kitchen. The kitchen is tiny but sufficient and only two and a half years old and we like it like that.

In short, the architect proposed moving the doorway from te hall into the livingroom towards the side, so we have more options for arranging our couch/tv. The second advice was replacing the closed doors with doors with glass panels to let light come through and create mire sightlines. This relative small change will make a big difference in hoe the room feels.

On to the annex: building permission statea that we can add to the livingroom on the side: six meters long and three meters wide. This will feel like doubling our livingroom space and creates a corner for my computer and sewing stuff that is out of view but still connected, plus a cosy place for the kids to play, have their toys strewn around and not be in the way. By using large doors that open up to the garden it will have a lot of natural light, the same doors will go into the current livingroom to create unity. We'd like to have aliding doors between the livingroom and the annex with the same glass panels as in the doors to the hallway, so the room can be closed off if needed.

We decided to not build an annex at the back of the house because it would be very expensive (like, 20.000 more) and because in the far and distant future we'd like to remodel our detached garage/shed into a freestanding studio space. In order to do so, we would enlarge that building a bit, add a bathroom and sink and also add big glas doors on our side to let light in. He made a drawing for us to drool over while we save money for the next ten years.

We are calling contracters to get an estimate and see how we could do this with planning and such. Then we have to figure out how to finance the whole thing and how we can survive the two months that our house is practically taken over by the builders. We hope to realize the annex at the end of this year, before Eliza can walk and it would be even harder to find a place to stay during the remodelling.

Lucky for us, we can make a temporary livingroom upstairs. Tiny but workable. And the kitchen and bathroom remain untouched which is also great. This is all very exciting 😄

We will eat macaroni and cheese doe the next decade in order to pay for this but we'll have a livingspace that is more open and light that we can enjoy every day.
