I was going through my youtube videos of my student recitals, and two of them have the sound muted due to copyrighted material. I searched for options on youtube on what to do, and one of the options is filing a claim. I claim that my video is 'fair use'. The owner of the music then has a chance to check the video and agree or disagree.

Most of this is automated btw, I can't imagine someone watching all those videos front to back and giving a well thought over response. What happened next?

I got a strike. Basically the owner of the song (an old recording of Bastaa anaak) refused my claim, and youtube suspended my 'good reputation'. This means I had to go to copyright school: watch a video and answer a couple of questions about copyright. Some of the features of my account are frozen, like earning income through ads. Didn't use that one anyway so that doesn't make me sad. But it is inconvenient because other options that I do use are not available either.

The status of my account will remain this way for six months, after which I will be reinstated as a person of good behavior. Unless I get more strikes, that's when youtube can decide to pull the plug on my account and remove all my video's. I have one more request pending, let's hope that one will not turn into a strike.
