Bellyfit update
Mar. 6th, 2014 11:40 amI did the instructor training in October last year, my practicum classes in november and got certified in December. Yay! I haven't gotten around to finding a place to teach bellyfit close to my new home, due to remodeling and moving. I taught a taster class to Sense of Bellydance, my dance sisters in Utrecht. They enjoyed it and one or two of them are interested in doing the next teacher training in June (Amsterdam).
I belive that this fitness system has it's merits and that learning the format will improve the teaching quality of Dutch belly dance teachers in general. This is a structured format that explains exactly why choices are made in the class structure and what the effect is on students. I also believe that being able to teach a fitness style class will improve the income of belly dance teachers. In short, I find myself a Bellyfit cheerleader and promoter, despite not teaching regular classes!
Yesterday Laudie asked if I could do a Goddess themed bellyfit class for her belly dance event on april 19th. She hosts the "asli Sharqi' festival, where traditional belly dance meets original bellydance. See how I carefully not used the word Fusion? Original can mean fusing stuff, but it can also mean teaching in an original way, or evolving belly dance. Previous teachers included Tito Seif, Aziza and Anasma. She decided to not do a festival anymore, but organize a one day event instead.
Next event on april 19th is goddess themed: A dancer from Amsterdam made a goddess themed theater show (four dancers) for the afternoon. The workshops during the day should be goddess themed. You can imagine how some of the teachers feel about that, but we all know that Laudie keeps the quality of dance high despite involving goddesses. Anyway, from the FaKyMa ladies, I finished the training course and got certified, Farah did the course but not the practicum classes and Maysa did a fitness certification ages ago and likes to hop along. In her words, she likes to participate and demonstrate as long as she is not teaching.
And now for the question: I enjoy teaching bellyfit in a different way from teaching belly dance. Belly dance is more personal, intense and rewarding because I create all the material myself. But if I have a little one running around, teaching Bellyfit is probably the best way to satisfy my need to teach and not go insane. Not to mention that we have a gym that offers free childcare around the corner, which would be an ideal match. It makes me wonder:
If a bellydancer is not actively teaching or performing, is she still a belly dancer?
