visit to Ada
Jan. 7th, 2015 11:45 pmI mentioned Ada before. She is bellydance family, due to yennie, joyce and me being Laudie's adopted dance daughters. That makes her our dance aunt. She is terminally ill and we went over to isitbher tonight.
She has lost so much weight, and can't keep food or water down so she is quickly losing more. She was very happy to see us and watches us have dinner (pizza and salad). The worst thing is that she is incredibly thirsty but she can't drink because then she throws up.
We talked and then she sent us upstairs to dive into a costume treasure chest. Her reasoning: she want the costumesto go to a happy home and good dancers, not end up in a second hand shop. We tried stuff and went home with a couple of costumes.
There is this odd thing about receiving a guft from someone who is so close to the end. We wish se wasn't ill. She's only 54 and without her illness she could go on for another four decades. Ahe assured us that she was very happy that her costumes are taken care of. ' Nothing worse than imagining a bad dancer in your beloved costume, or costumes ending up in the discount bin at a thriftstore.' Truth be told, when I die I hope to make some people happy with my costume collection. It is very personal and emotional to create and wear a costume. This thing we call bellydance turns our memories into precious gemstones and our costumes become more than a sum of glitterdot and swarovski crystals. They represent how we feel when we dance. I can imagine her wishing her happiness lives on through us.
I will post pictures later. I loved her vintage homemade costume, it's a fixer upper but very nice. Black base with multicolor gems set in plastic white pearls, verry effective on stage. I am very happy with a multicolor Enhanted Gardens bedlah from Pharaonics, with a matching Christina (?) skirt in plum. Since I am into folcloric, I fell for a saaidi type circle skirt with gold coin edge and lirex stripes. It is very old school and needs a special sword dance choreography.
I also ended up with a belah completely beaded with black/oil pearls on short fringe. It is amazing when worn, tons of movement. I now have a couple extra chores to make the costumes fit. We also promised Ada a livingroom hafla so she could see her costumes being worn. We're hoping she'll live long enough and have enough energy to throw such a party
