I wasn't very organized and clearheaded this week. The result is that I forgot about a lot of things. In general, the photographer and me worked well together. We were shooting in a vmbo-school. That's the type of school where students learn how to repair cars, cook, cut hair, build walls, etc. We had a quick look around before we started to look for good sites. The lights were set up in the drama classroom with a neat curtain providing me with room to change. The space was also used for prop and costume storage, so I felt right at home between old felt hats, costume racks and plastic boxes with feathered dresses.

We started out with the striped Victorian. that's when I noticed how only the top part of the dress was in the clothing bag. argh! we made do with tbe bustle underskirt, but it looks less cool then it could have been. I could smack myself over and over for forgetting! then on with the black and white striped corset and pink lycra skirt. Those resulted in very nice modern type poses, some standing and some sitting. I haven't done much shoots with my historic costumes so this was new, exciting and scary at the same time. I learned that bringing a lint roller is a great idea.

Around five we went to the restaurant part in the school where students were cooking and serving a delicious three course dinner. I should add that I never have dined with a photographer before. There are a couple of awkward moments during a photo shoot. For starters, the first time you meet, when you don't know whether you'll be great together or totally suck.

You start shooting and things are getting better. The pictures of the first outfit are usually crap and after that, things get better. You get a feeling about what the photographer wants, you loosen up, start to use other facial expressions then the forced smile you've been wearing for the first 15 minutes. About 2/3 of the shoot, you're at your best. Always schedule the costume you like most at this point, as you will probably get a bit goofy and try new poses. Some of those work, some of them don't. The point is that this is the moment your creativity is at it's prime. Go for it!

Then, as the end is near, it will get awkward again. You shared a couple of hours together, gotten closer and now it's time to end the shoot and go your separate ways. It's like you're becoming friends, then suddenly realizing your in a work relationship. I'm glad that awkwardness is getting less with every photo shoot.

Back to the shoot! We got right back in at 18.30 (it was a really good dinner :) ) with the belly dance costumes. The turquoise Bella got a spin, mostly because I really need to sell it and good pictures work miracles. The skirt on that costume doesn't do much for me. The second one was the white/gold Hanan, that the photographer disliked. His words:'it's bland'. I'm not sure if I agree with him, but he lightened up when I took the 4 yard tropical sunset veil to brighten things up. The photographer was a big fan of the purple/green Neckelmans, the bedlah I made a new bra for in 2006, together with a headband, armbands and a skirt. We did some experimenting, posing with peacock feathers.

It was getting really late and the school was nearly deserted. At one point, all the lights went out and the photographer had to go downstairs to put them back on. For one moment I was afraid we were going to be locked in! During the day I met some of the other teachers in the school and the headmaster, who all knew of the photo shoot and were happy to see us

Around 21.00, we were beat. Time to pack up and go home! The photographer drove me to the station and I had another 1.15 hour train trip before getting home. I arrived at 23.30 and went straight into bed. Think we both had fun and there are some very nice pictures in there, once he gets through them. Things I learned on this shoot:

  • always check the inside of the clothing bag. being sure something is in there doesn't mean it really is
  • bring a lint roller
  • 9 outfits is too much. we did 5.
