An image says more than a thousand words and this is especially true for dancers. Okay, moving images are even more eloquent, but you need recent and fresh promotion pictures for your website, flyers, business cards, facebook and all the other media. I haven't written much about the business side of belly dance as I'm currently focusing more on my day job but the december/january photo shoot is a tradition that I simply can't miss. There's nothing like kicking off a new year by looking at some nice glamour shots of yourself, preferably while you have a hangover and are still in your pj's with crazy out of bed hair.
This time I was contacted by an amateur photographer called Pieter, who asked me if it was okay to do a shoot with two photographers at the same time so they could rent a studio and split the cost. The other photographer was Peter, who also works through Modelpit. Modelpit is the website where I find photographers, and photographers find me for tfp shoots. This was a first for me, I previously did shoots with one photographer, most of it studio work. The shoot was held in a studio next to the station in Hilversum. I arrived around 19.00, greeted the photographers who were hauling equipment into the studio.
Hilversum is the town where all Dutch television programs are produced and the studio was from a former media academy. It was the largest studio I've ever seen, with a specially build white wall of 6x6 meters, the total space being somewhere around 10x10 meter. They used to teach students how to become a cameraman and make television in this studio, then they decided to taket hings to a higher (read: more expensive) level, moved into a big villa and went bankrupt. The photographers continued setting up and I started on my make-up. They had specifically requested intense eye make-up, but I decided to keep it relative basic as we would be doing three different outfits. By basic I mean performance make-up: huge fake lashes, dark eye shadow in the eyelid crease, gold eye shadow for the highlights, eye pencil blended underneath the eyes and liquid liner on top to hide the base of the lashes. They liked the eyes :-)
We started off with some eye close-ups and a veil wrapped around my head combined with a piece of equipment called a beauty dish. It makes your eyes stand out. I was slightly afraid of seeing my eyes in a close-up as the under eye bags are getting more pronounced every year, they did a great job on the lighting and it looked pretty good. We then moved on to upper body close-ups, standing poses and veil work.
The outfits
I brought three belly dance outfits:
1. the black lace and holographic silver dress with pearls from the Oum Kolthoum Project. I have not shown you pictures of the show yet (shame on me!) so here is one:

2. the green/gold costume that I started in 2006 and finished in 2011. It has abla/noussa like beading:

3. the pink/gold turkish costume that I made at the start of 2011:

It was interesting to work with two photographers as each has their own preferences with regards to light and poses. We ended up shooting until after midnight, then breaking down all the equipment. Peter offered to drive me home and dropped me off in Utrecht, where I celebrated with some late night (Dutch) pancakes. I'll post results once I made a pick of the pictures :-) This is the first shoot that lasted well after midnight, it was fun to work in a larger studio and with two photographers at the same time.
